Better Globe has only one product - TREES!
According to estimates by the United Nation, 24 billion tons of fertile soil disappears annually due to the desertification in the world. Desertification affects one quarter of the total land surface of the globe today. Without any doubts the most effective way to prevent this major threat is by improving agriculture.
Better Globe grows its plantation in semi-desert areas where neither forestry nor any agriculture has occurred previously. We believe improving social protection is the most effective way to combat poverty and therefore do what we can to stop desertification and water shortages. Many other companies are accused of “land grabbing”. Our way of conducting business is to grow our plantations in consultation with local people.
We incorporated ourselves to become experts in the selection and care of trees when we plant in almost the worst possible areas. We only select trees that meet these climatic conditions and which can live and grow there. It has also given us valuable knowledge and expertise in dealing with water and irrigation efficiency. Knowledge, which we share with many farmers around the plantations, in various educational ways and also pertaining to micro finance activities.
Better Globe works with different system of water harvesting and water utilizations in order provide water to the young tree seedlings over a very wide spread area. This way we can be very effective to conserve water and by creating large green areas in the middle of the semi-desert areas that unless otherwise could become a desert within ten years.
This is also one of the main reasons the owners and residents in these areas are eager that Better Globe’s plantations will establish in their countries, since we are creating jobs where there are no jobs and finding ways to bring water where there is none. We also contribute towards establishing new schools and making it possible for them to obtain micro loans.
The trees are the building block of Better Globe
Tree planting is the core of our concept to combat hunger and poverty, as well as climate deterioration and desertification. Trees are important, valuable and necessary to our existence and are also the most essential in restoring the balance of nature and give vegetation a chance to return to these areas. Tree roots bind soil and prevent erosion. Trees fight soil erosion, conserve rainwater and reduce water runoff.
The process of preserving and preparing the ground, planting and replanting, harvesting and caring for the trees create a variety of jobs. The ability to create jobs through massive tree planting serves many purposes and is therefore the most essential to Better Globe’s business.
The trees that we plant
- Acacia Senegal – a relatively common tree in Africa that produces gum arabic which is used in a number of different ways. This tree gives a profit from the 5th. to the 19th. year by harvesting and processing gum Arabic and sell this commodity in the market place.
- Mukau – A tree in the Mahogany family that once grew wild in Africa but was almost extinct when Better Globe took on to save the tree and start with industrial plantations in Kenya. Mukau is hard wood and is able to produce valuable products like floor tiles, furniture, window and door frames, etc. This tree will give back a relatively good harvest after 20 years, when it is being cut for timber.
